Project Overview
This project entailed designing a new concept washing machine for Indesit - Hotpoint, for the European market.
Project Brief
Create a washing machine for busy people who have lots of things to do and not a lot of time to do them.
Inspiration
Deriving from tactile familiarity, the machine was meant to be intuitive and easy-to-use.
Proposed Solution
The concept behind 'Cognizance' was to allow the user to not think about laundry at all. A machine that would self-start, leaving the user with one less chore to do.
Key features
A pre-programmable machine that can start doing laundry on its own.
It would operate based on filled volume or delayed start.
The machine drum is meant to be used as the laundry basket.
User can either choose to start the laundry after either a particular duration of time or after the clothes fill the drum to a certain volume.
A red light would blink to indicate that the amount of clothes are more than the chosen volume capacity.
The delay start interface allows the user to choose a suitable time, during which the user can focus on other chores or activities.
User scenario (primary research)
The machine is fitted with a hidden 1.5 litre detergent container.
In-situ mockup of 'Cognizance
The user would have replenish the detergent once a month.
